| "The
novel was, as we say, published 'quietly'. With little media
interest the initial print run of 1,000 seemed quite appropriate.
Three years later that same title has sold over 300,000 copies.
This is the story of Salley Vickers's MISS GARNET'S ANGEL,
but its not unique. We've all experienced the word-of-mouth
book. The book caught on, Vickers says, thanks to a popular
movement, starting with a small group of passionate and committed
booksellers. Their enthusiasm was infectious, and it doesn't
require a degree in maths to realise how, if each bookseller
tells six customers, who then go on to tell six friends, sales
can rise exponentially.
In Vickers case word of mouth spread organically, via booksellers.
Aside from a website, designed by a friend, which included
background material for readers' groups, very little specific
was done to generate it."
